Because of their large muscle mass and in comparison with their surface area, they warm up faster and cool down less efficiently than humans. This is the temperature range in which a horse can easily maintain its body temperature. The thermoneutral zone can vary depending on the horse&#8217;s environment when temperatures approach 28\u00b0C or higher, especially with high humidity, horses struggle to dissipate heat effectively. This increases the risk of dangerously high body temperatures(Lindinger &#038; Marlin, 1995).   <\/p><p>The <strong>Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index<\/strong> is a good tool for assess heat stress accurately. Clinical signs include: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lethargy, weakness, and ataxia (loss of coordination)<\/li>\n<li>Lack of interest in food, water, or surroundings<\/li>\n<li>Reduced sweating ability<\/li>\n<li>Metabolic issues like muscle stiffness, colic, and kidney failure<\/li>\n<li>Reddened mucous membranes (Bongers et al., 2017; Sloet, 2014)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, high core temperatures can lead to fatigue, as the central nervous system <strong>decreases muscle strength<\/strong> to prevent further heat production (Bongers et al., 2017). If you notice one or more of these symptoms in your horse, it\u2019s critical to act quickly. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cc77446 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"cc77446\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fadfb16 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fadfb16\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Can You Do to Prevent Overheating?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5bc58e elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f5bc58e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dbad154 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dbad154\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Preventing heat stress in horses requires proactive management, especially during hot weather:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Monitor environmental conditions:<\/strong> Use the WBGT index to assess when it&#8217;s safe to train or compete (Marlin et al, 2018; Sloet, 2014). <\/li><li><strong>When not needed to compete in hot environments OR when ambient temperature &gt; 30 \u00b0C &#8211;&gt; Limit exercise:<\/strong> Reduce the intensity and duration of training sessions during hot weather and avoid the heat by training in the early morning or late evening.<\/li><li><strong>Ambient temperature &lt; 30 \u00b0C &#038; need to compete maybe under warm circumstances &#8211;&gt;Acclimate your horse:<\/strong> Expose your horse to warm conditions and train during the warm periods of the day for at least 14 days in a row to help them adapt physically (Marlin et al., 2018, Munsters et al. 2024). <strong>Monitor your horse closely<\/strong> and seek <strong>expert advice<\/strong> when doing this.<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.equineintegration.com\/cooling-your-horse\/\">Cooling strategies<\/a>:<\/strong> After exercise, cool your horse thoroughly with cold or ice water.
