HORSES, like humans, are subject to the same aches, strains, and pains as humans. The connective tissue of their bodies-such as the ligaments and tendons, work to protect muscle and bone from stresses brought on by normal pasture play, riding, and aging. Over time, connective tissue can become impaired, restricting free movement of muscle and bone.  These stresses result in patterns of tension that are held in the horses' bodies. To the rider, this shows up as stiffness or lack of flexibility in the horse's shoulders, back, neck, or hips

Does the larger equine community recognize the benefits?

Yes. One well known horse that benefited from this work is Gershwin, the USDF Region 5 and British National Championships Grand Prix champion.  There have been several articles written (Trail Blazer, Flying Changes, Horseman’s Yankee Peddler, and Yearbook of Structural Integration).  Professional stables such as Reno-Tahoe Equestrian Center employ an equine structural integration practitioner for service on their horses.
Disclaimer: Bodywork is not a substitute for veterinary treatment and care. Please consult with your veterinarian to discuss if equine structural integration is appropriate for your horse.
